After the catastrophic earthquake measuring 8.0 on Richter scales hit the Sichuan Province, China on May 12, 2008, claiming more than 69,000 lives and displacing more than 5 million people, the Kansas City Chinese Association (KCCA) initiated and spearheaded a massive fund-raising effort to provide much-needed relief to the disaster areas. With great enthusiasm and significant contributions, KCCA was then joined by the Confucius Institute, Waddell & Reed and Black & Veatch among many other corporations and organizations, and general public making this event a huge success.

Educational needs have been identified as the top priority for the use of these funds since tens of thousands of school children have been displaced from their badly damaged schools. A steering committee consisting of representatives from KCCA, the Confucius Institute, Waddell & Reed and Black Veatch was created to oversee this "KC-Sichuan Friendship School" project. The selection criteria for establishing a list of school candidates has been established as follows :
  • The recipient school has endured significant earthquake damage with normal school functions severely disrupted;
  • Funds will be used mainly for restoration, re-building and necessary upgrades or expansions to accommodate displaced students;
  • The entity receiving the funds shall have process and procedures in place for accountability of the use of the funds. Project reporting and approval by the steering committee is the prerequisite for funds release.
Several school applications have been received and are being reviewed by the committee, including Jinzishan Village Elementary school (金子山乡中 心小学), Yinsha Village Elementary school (银沙村小学) and Yingpan Village Elementary school (营盘乡中心小学) in Qingchuan County (青川县) of the Sichuan Province.

These contributions were given out of the desire of donors to positively impact the lives of students in the stricken areas of China. In addition the donors will share in the following benefits:
  • The name of the school will be the "KC Friendship School" (堪城小学), which reflects the joint efforts from individuals, organizations and companies in the KC area. The goal is to build a bridge between the people of KC and the people of the earthquake impacted areas.
  • There will be a plague in the school area engraved with the names of each individual and organization donor.
  • There will be additional opportunities for potential long-lasting culture exchange programs(pen pal, adopt-a-family, etc.) in the future
We'll keep update our website with future development and continuous updates of the project and what impact your donation will have on school children’s life in the disaster-stricken area of Sichuan Province.
